Great thoughts, Susan! You might consider doing a complete how-to series based on these ideas. I'm sure your readers would benefit from your knowledge!

With all the great choices locally it is going to be hard to choose the perfect gift for family and friends this year. I hope you will update the post with a new list for this holiday season.

I couldn't agree more.

We've been in business for over a year and a half and just finally got a good sense of who we're actually competing with and who we should really focus on approaching for new work. Of course a larger look at our branding and positioning helped as well.

Great article!!

I can vouch for the success of this strategy - since January 2009, I've been concentrating a lot more on marketing my business, and I've experienced growth of monthly revenues of about 300-400%. This was during the downturn, not after things started improving. I've heard over and over again from people, "Why would you try and grow a business in this economy?" My answer is that the opportunities are still out there.

The other thing I'm seeing is that as our economic conditions improve (and from my perspective, they absolutely seem to be), I'm getting a lot more calls from people I communicated with during the worst parts of the downturn. They may not have had the money to do the projects they wanted to do back when we first talked, but they do now and remember talking to me. This has just recently started to pay off, but I can tell it's going to continue to as people start to recover and return to a less fiscally conservative mindset.

Susan, what a great article on why a small business should outsource their marketing. So many small business owners will spend sometimes hours doing stuff that distracts them from focusing on what they do best. Thanks for the article.
